How to Start Your Own Blog Website
69
If you are thinking about how to start your own blog, it really isn't as difficult as you might imagine.
As long as you know what to do and how to do it.
How do I know?
Well, before outlining the steps to starting a successful blog website, let me share a story with you about my own journey into the world of setting up websites and online marketing.
Back in 2007 I asked a friend of mine to complete a website for my business.
The plan was for a "simple" one page website to market one of my businesses, and then drive traffic to it through direct mail. My goal was to get it up and running so that at least I could point to the site to show that I had a "real" business.
That' right. These days seeing is believing. Anyway...
I paid him nearly $1000 to get the project moving.
And then the months slowly ticked away. Then the excuses started coming when I asked when my new website would be ready. Four painful and anxious months later he just stopped calling with excuses.
That's when I got angry.
So I bought a course for $495 to learn how to set up mini-sites. I worked away on the course at night for a month, and finally was ready to create my first site.
What happened next?
Well, nearly 7 months after I paid my friend for the project, he called to tell me that my new website would be ready in a few weeks.
I politely told him that it was no longer needed. I had moved on.
A few moments of awkward silence followed. And after he cleared his throat he had the nerve to tell me that he needed to be "paid for his time." Above and beyond the $1000 I had already paid him.
Are you kidding me?
You can't make this stuff up.
So I basically told him that he should be happy that I didn't take him to court for the money I already forked over to him.
And then I thanked him for putting me through such an awful experience, because I now felt empowered to control my online marketing needs.
The rest, as they say, is history.
So how do you start a new website?
Well, you don't have to buy a course on html if that's what you're thinking. Changes online and trends with search engines actually make it MUCH easier for you to start a website these days.
For starters, you'll need a URL and hosting account. That part is fairly straightforward enough. Then you'll want to set up your new website up as a blog.
There are a TON of reasons for doing this. Search engines favor blogs over traditional websites, and that trend is going to continue. ALL of my websites these days are blogs. You can learn more about why to do this by following the link to how to start a website.
Once your new site is structured as a blog, you can post new content, audios, videos in a snap, just like those free blogging services. But with MUCH MORE flexibility and control.
What's more, since you own your site AND your content, you can "brand" yourself. It's your site. You own it.
So what are the keys to getting started?
- do keyword research to find a great URL for your site
- check if the URL is available, and stick to .com if you can
- buy the URL and get a good hosting account (it matters)
- find a blog template (tons of free ones are available, and premium ones don't cost too much)
- install the blog template
- add your first post and you're ready to go.
It may seem a bit overwhelming, but if I can do it so can you. I also set up a website where we walk people through the steps on how to start your own blog website.
There are two program options:
- join a live tele-class (5 calls) along with 31 days of video lessons and interactive Q&A
- sign up for the independent program track (self-study) option and work through the material on your own.
Either option is VERY affordable, so you will definitely want to check it out. Does that sound fair enough to you?
Setting up a new website doesn't have to be difficult, or stressful. You shouldn't have to experience what I went through just to grow my business.
